Addicted to WATERCOLOR? Me Too. 6 Reasons I Just Can't Stop

Hey there all you clever crafters!!

It's no secret that I am absolutely addicted to watercolors.... Twinkling H2O's or rather the more affectionately named TWINKS to be precise.  So when I  saw our March theme "WATERCOLOR BACKGROUND" I was excited to pull out those shimmering little jars of magic and splash some paint around!

I chose to work with this beautiful Rose-1 digital stamp from our lovely March sponsor Stampers Delight which you can download instantly HERE.

I started out by opening the file in photoshop, this stamp comes with a transparent png labelled file #3 which is the one that I used.  Once open in photoshop I reduced the layer transparency down to 70% before printing it out onto some handmade watercolor paper.

When painting an image like this I love to start with the background and just cover the page in paint, from there I build up the color, translucent layer over translucent layer.

Here are my top 6 reasons I just can't stop watercolors, some might say I'm a watercolor addict! lol

1. Low Maintenance, Low Cost

Watercolors are so easy, low maintenance and portable!  Grab your brushes, paper, paints and water and you have everything you need to do some painting where ever you feel comfortable.

2. Free Your Mind

Self expression thru spontaneity; the watercolors are truly in control, all we can do is guide the process as the watercolors lead the way. With the pressure off its time to just have fun, let the watercolors do their magic while discovering your true self.

3. Translucent Layers

More layers adds more interest making the work more visually pleasing the more layers you add!  Do you know what this means? Its easy to take risks knowing that even if you don't like how it looks you can just add another layer and your painting will just look better for it. Its hard to summarize here in a few words, if you are interested in reading more about this I wrote a blog on the subject a few years ago HERE

4. Overworked Is A Myth

I've heard many people say you only get one chance at a painting with watercolor and for this reason you must be cautious, careful not to overwork the painting, this scares people and makes people afraid to start when all this couldn't be further from the truth.  In fact what most people consider "overworked" is generally underworked and could benefit from more translucent layers (see point number 3)

5. Stress Relieving

Watercolor painting just melts the stress away, literally!!  I can paint for hours and hours and it only feels like minutes have gone by, I feel so much more relaxed and stress free!

6. No Fuss, Safe, Non Toxic

For the most part watercolors are probably the safest paints on the market, the clean up is quick and easy not requiring any toxic chemicals or anything like that, just plain water will do. If you are like me and have a cat in the studio who is drawn to drink paint water no matter how hard you try to keep them out of it, the peace of mind knowing that if they get a lick in here or there its not going to kill them is worth it!
